Africa critical minerals and the missing link in governance

Crystol Energy CEO, Dr. Carole Nakhle, was quoted in Al Mayadeen English on the growing push for a coalition of critical mineral producing nations in Africa. She noted that resource rich countries increasingly see their mineral wealth as a strategic asset for the global energy transition and want greater control over how it is developed.

Dr Nakhle explained that the call for a new coalition reflects a wider trend of host governments seeking a stronger say over their natural resources. At the same time, she expressed doubts about how far the latest initiative can go, given the continent’s mixed record with regional cooperation and shared projects.

She stressed that outcomes will depend on the strength of national policies and the quality of governance in the extractive sector. Despite vast resource wealth, many African countries still face deep poverty and underdevelopment. This gap, she warned, shows a persistent disconnect between natural riches and sustainable economic progress.
