UAE energy policy gives Stargate AI Project a strong foundation

In a feature published by Erem Business, Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, shared her views on the energy foundations behind Stargate UAE, Abu Dhabi’s major artificial intelligence infrastructure project. The project is expected to strengthen the UAE’s position as a global hub for the knowledge economy, supported by large scale data centre capacity and partnerships with leading global technology companies.

Dr. Nakhle highlighted that the UAE has one of the most advanced and diversified energy systems in the region, with a strong track record in delivering major energy projects. She explained that the country’s combination of nuclear, solar and natural gas provides a solid foundation for energy intensive industries, including artificial intelligence and data centres. Nuclear power offers reliable baseload electricity, solar continues to expand rapidly, and natural gas provides the flexibility needed to support rising power demand.

She added that any further expansion in power capacity would be a natural evolution of the UAE’s energy strategy, especially as artificial intelligence increases electricity consumption. In her view, this reinforces the importance of natural gas in the UAE’s energy mix and serves as a reminder that oil and gas will continue to play an important role in powering economic growth alongside lower carbon energy sources. The UAE’s diversified energy mix and integrated approach to energy planning place it in a strong position to support large scale computing infrastructure and expand its wider digital economy.
