In a recent interview with BBC World News, Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, discussed the rise in oil prices amid intensifying attacks by Iran-aligned groups across the Middle East.
Dr Nakhle explained that the escalation is raising concerns about the conflict spiralling beyond control. However, the developments are not entirely unexpected and could be interpreted as part of an effort to increase pressure on the US administration ahead of the midterm elections.
With geopolitical developments changing rapidly, uncertainty remains a major driver of oil prices. The direction of the market can shift significantly from one day to the next as political and military developments unfold.
While higher energy prices are a concern for the global economy, Dr Nakhle noted that they remain relatively modest given the extraordinary scale of the crisis. Importantly, the region has not yet experienced the worst-case scenario, which would involve a much wider war drawing countries across the Middle East into direct military confrontation. Avoiding such an escalation remains critical.
