As the Iran war upends energy flows, Russia is emerging as the real winner

Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, was featured in CNBC discussing how the recent rise in oil prices has created a short term advantage for Russia. As one of the world’s largest oil exporters, Russia stands to benefit from higher state revenues when prices rise and sanctions enforcement becomes less restrictive.

Dr. Nakhle noted, however, that this benefit has clear limits. While Russia may gain in the near term from stronger prices and some easing in the practical enforcement of sanctions, shipping and insurance restrictions still constrain its exports. She also pointed out that Russia’s heavy reliance on a small group of buyers, especially India and China, reduces its ability to fully capitalize on supply disruptions elsewhere.
