Celebrating 20 Years of NRGI and the Future of Resource Governance

As the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) marks its twentieth anniversary, the milestone comes at a defining moment for the global resource governance agenda. Oil, gas, and mining continue to shape markets and political priorities, yet governance is too often sidelined, even though decisions about natural resources remain central to development, democracy, and climate outcomes.

This anniversary also offers an opportunity to reflect on the people and ideas that have helped shape that conversation over the past two decades. As a board member and Audit Committee member at NRGI, Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, highlighted the institute’s wider contribution, noting that the resource governance movement has helped shift the global conversation from simply extracting resources to considering how those resources are governed and managed for public benefit.

Throughout 2026, NRGI will convene thematic explorations, reflections, and conversations on what has worked, what has not, and what must change as the sector looks toward 2050. At a time when investment in accountability and reform is under pressure, this anniversary is not only a celebration of past progress, but also a timely call to strengthen governance for a new era.
