Dr Carole Nakhle Delivers Keynote on the New Structure of Global Energy Markets at Emerson / AspenTech Upstream Innovation Day

Dr Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy and a leading authority on global energy markets, delivered the keynote address at the Emerson / AspenTech Upstream Innovation Day in Stavanger on 10 February 2026.

Her keynote, titled “The New Structure of Global Energy Markets,” examined the structural shifts reshaping capital allocation, competitiveness and long-term strategy across the oil and gas industry.

Addressing senior industry leaders, Dr Nakhle argued that the sector is not experiencing temporary turbulence, but operating under new structural conditions defined by geopolitical fragmentation, intensifying competition and enduring demand uncertainty.

She highlighted three defining features of the emerging landscape:

  • Globalisation under strain: While globalisation more broadly faces increasing pressure, oil and gas markets remain fundamentally global. However, energy’s relative insulation from protectionism should not be taken for granted.
  • Markets are competitive, not scarce: Oil markets show no structural shortage, with competition among producers intensifying. In gas, LNG globalisation is deepening integration but bringing cyclicality and volatility rather than guaranteed rents.
  • Transition risk is structural: Momentum may fluctuate, but the direction of travel in energy policy remains intact. Demand uncertainty is now a permanent feature of the market environment.

Dr Nakhle emphasised that under these new conditions, competitive advantage will increasingly depend on efficiency and cost discipline, lower carbon intensity, commercial flexibility, and balanced fiscal and contractual frameworks.

“The industry’s enduring strength lies in its capacity to adapt,” Dr Nakhle noted. “Engineering excellence and strategic agility remain decisive advantages in a structurally more complex market.”

The Upstream Innovation Day brought together senior executives and technical leaders to explore how technology, strategy and market dynamics are reshaping the upstream sector.

Crystol Energy has worked with AspenTech over several years on strategic energy market analysis, reflecting an ongoing professional collaboration.

Dr Nakhle expressed her appreciation to Ron Beck, Senior Director, AspenTech SSE Product Marketing, for the invitation, and to the Emerson EMEA field marketing team for delivering a high-level and impeccably organised event.
