What OTC Malaysia Reveals About the Next Phase of Energy Markets

Crystol Energy’s CEO, Dr Carole Nakhle, moderated two leadership panels at the Offshore Technology Conference Asia in Malaysia, bringing together senior executives from national and international oil companies, service providers, and technology companies.

The discussions took place at a time when geopolitical developments – particularly in the Middle East – are once again reshaping energy markets and accelerating structural shifts.

As Dr Carole Nakhle noted:
“Disruptions of this magnitude do not simply pass; they tend to accelerate structural shifts, leaving energy markets configured differently than before.”

These developments are not only affecting supply; they are also shaping Asia Pacific, the region driving global demand growth, and where responses to these shifts are increasingly being defined.

Several key themes emerged from these discussions.

  • Asia’s expanding role: Asia is no longer only the centre of demand growth. It is increasingly where investment decisions are made, projects are developed, and new capacity is built, positioning the region at the core of evolving global energy systems.
  • From ambition to delivery: The industry does not lack ambition or solutions. Many of the technologies required to deliver lower-carbon energy are already known and, in some cases, proven. The primary challenge lies in execution: ensuring projects are investable, approvable, and commercially viable.
  • Policy as a driver of investment: Policy frameworks are becoming increasingly decisive in shaping investment decisions. Clarity, consistency, and credible market signals – through pricing mechanisms, fiscal regimes, and regulatory processes – are essential to enable large-scale deployment.
  • The need for broader collaboration: Collaboration must extend beyond traditional partnerships. Delivering energy at scale requires coordination across the full ecosystem, including national and international companies, service providers, financiers, regulators, and academic institutions.
  • The enduring role of natural gas: Despite current market volatility, natural gas remains central to the energy mix in Asia Pacific. Strengthening domestic production will be critical to enhancing energy security, affordability, and system resilience.

The next phase of the energy industry will depend on how effectively the system aligns across policy, capital, and infrastructure to deliver at scale.
