Oil poised for weekly gain

In this interview given to Tom Mackenzie from Bloomberg TV, Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, explores the key differences in oil demand forecasts between OPEC and the International Energy Agency (IEA). Dr. Nakhle also sheds light on other critical market dynamics influencing the energy sector.

Dr Carole Nakhle discusses oil markets developments with Bloomberg

Key takeaways:

– Oil prices have fluctuated this summer, hitting an eight-month low before recovering. Despite the rebound and an abundance of geopolitical tensions, prices remain unexpectedly low for this time of year, typically marked by high demand due to holiday travel.

– China, the top oil importer, has reported slower crude imports due to economic issues, and recent U.S. job data has raised recession fears. Middle East tensions have not escalated as anticipated.

– The geopolitical risk premium is currently moderated by ample spare capacity and a lack of major supply disruptions.

– While the IEA and OPEC are increasingly diverging in their oil demand forecasts, both organizations see Asia, especially China, as crucial for demand growth this year, a forecast that might be challenged.

– As long as OPEC sticks to its own demand forecasts, it is unlikely that the organization will adjust its output policy for the rest of the year, all things held equal.

– Given the current market conditions, oil prices are expected to fluctuate between $75 and $80 per barrel. However, these forecasts should be approached with caution due to the historical unpredictability of the market.
