Dr Carole Nakhle, Founder & CEO of Crystol Energy, recently spoke at the inaugural Arab Women Week held at Mansion House in London – the official residence of the Lord Mayor – alongside leading figures from business, policy, and academia.
As part of the discussion on energy, geopolitics, and leadership, Dr. Nakhle addressed three key themes shaping today’s energy landscape.
Navigating Uncertainty
Uncertainty remains a defining feature of energy markets. Rather than attempting to eliminate it, decision-makers must learn to navigate it. This requires clarity on what is known and unknown, discipline in avoiding overreaction to short-term headlines, and the experience to distinguish between temporary disruptions and structural change.
Reframing Risk in the Middle East
Current discourse on the Middle East often centres on oil prices. However, this narrow focus overlooks the broader reality. Beyond market dynamics, the region’s future is shaped by the people who live and work there and whose sense of stability is increasingly affected by geopolitical developments. Understanding this human dimension is essential for a more complete assessment of risk.
The Talent Challenge in Energy
While progress has been made in increasing the participation of women in the energy sector, particularly at entry and mid-levels, representation at senior levels remains uneven. More fundamentally, the industry faces a broader talent challenge. Attracting the next generation requires providing clearer visibility on long-term career prospects in a sector undergoing significant transformation.
Dr. Nakhle’s intervention emphasised the need to move beyond short-term narratives and simplistic frameworks, and instead adopt a more nuanced and forward-looking perspective on energy, geopolitics, and leadership.
