Crystol Energy’s CEO, Dr Carole Nakhle, delivered a keynote address at IPIECA Week in London, one of the leading global forums bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and international organisations. As the oil and gas industry’s primary interface with the United Nations on sustainability and climate-related issues, IPIECA plays a central role in shaping discussions on the future of energy.
The keynote explored how to navigate today’s increasingly uncertain energy landscape, drawing on recent developments in the Middle East while placing them within a broader historical and strategic context.
A central theme of the presentation was the notion of a “swinging pendulum” in energy narratives. In the years leading up to 2025, momentum behind the energy transition was strong, supported by ambitious targets and policy commitments. More recently, however, the narrative has shifted, with some targets being reconsidered and more sceptical views emerging.
The key question is whether this marks another reversal. The conclusion is more nuanced.
Rather than a sharp swing back, the global energy system appears to be entering a more pragmatic phase, characterised by:
- A renewed focus on energy security and affordability
- Continued emphasis on diversification across all energy sources
- Increased investment across the full energy value chain, including infrastructure
- Diverging pathways and speeds of transition across regions
The energy transition is recalibrated in response to evolving geopolitical and economic realities.
The event also provided an opportunity to exchange views with stakeholders across the energy sector on the challenges and opportunities shaping global energy markets.
