Energy CEOs highlight returns, competitiveness and human judgement in an increasingly technology-driven industry

Gastech 2026 Insights

Senior energy executives highlighted the importance of commercial returns, regional competitiveness and human judgement as the industry embraces artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies during the CEO Plenary at GOTECH 2026 in Dubai.

Moderated by Crystol Energy CEO Dr Carole Nakhle, the discussion examined how energy companies can remain competitive and create value amid technological, geopolitical and structural change, covering investment and growth, AI and technology, the evolution of energy companies, and future talent and skills.

AI featured prominently throughout the discussion, with executives pointing to opportunities to improve productivity, operational performance and decision-making. Yet enthusiasm for technology was consistently accompanied by a focus on commercial outcomes. Return on investment emerged repeatedly as a key consideration, reinforcing the importance of translating technological promise into demonstrable value.

The discussion also highlighted the continuing competitive position of Middle Eastern oil producers. There was broad agreement among the panellists that, whenever the last barrel of oil is eventually produced, it is likely to come from the region. As competition for investment intensifies, production costs, resource quality and reliability of supply will remain important determinants of competitiveness.

The CEO Plenary brought together Dr Ahmed Mohamed Alebri, CEO, ADNOC Onshore; Abdulkarim AlMaazmi, CEO, Dragon Oil; Khamis Almazrouei, CEO, SNOC; Sara Akbar, CEO, OilServ Kuwait; and Song Yu, Executive Chairman, United Energy Group.

Concluding the CEO Plenary, Dr Nakhle said: “Technology has always shaped the evolution of the oil and gas industry. But ultimately, it is people, not machines, who exercise judgement and make decisions.”

GOTECH 2026, hosted by Dragon Oil and organised in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), brought together energy leaders and professionals in Dubai to exchange perspectives on the forces shaping the future of the industry.
